The Basilica of San Lorenzo is the oldest church in Florence.
Founded in 393 and rebuilt in the eleventh century, the last period in which it underwent construction, it was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi.
It is one of the first and clearest formulations of the architecture of Renaissance Florence.
The interior preserves numerous masterpieces, such as the magnificent Cantoria or choir loft by Donatello, or the marvellous Annunciazione by Filippo Lippi, the beautiful Tabernacolo by Desiderio da Settignano, or the Sagrestia Vecchia or old sacristy by Brunelleschi, decorated by Donatello, a paradigmatic example of humanist rationality applied to architecture.
